Points:

1, Definition
Points are effective sites on the body for ZhenJiu therapies in the treatment of diseases . They were called Shuxue, Qi xue, Kongxue, Xuedao and so on in ancient time. Points are mostly located between tendons, bones and muscle s, pertaining to the 14 Meridians respectively

2. Function
Points can be used to treat diseases and keep good Health by removing obstruction in the jing Luo( Meridians and collaterals ), regulating Qi and blood, reinforcing the deficiency and reducing the excess. They possess the functions in treating immediate and remote, local and general disorders of the body Local function
Each point has its local function, points on the eye region can be used to treat eye diseases . Points oil the ear region can be used to treat ear diseases Points on the a bdominal region can be used to treat diseases of internal organs , etc.

(2) Remote function
Besides the local functions many points have their remote functions. For example, Neiguan(PC6) on the for ear m, can be used to treat disorders of the chest , heart and stomach , Zusanli(ST36) on the lower part of the leg can be punctured to treat disorders of the abdomen

(3) General function
Besides the two functions mentioned above, some other points have the function for treating systemic disorders. For instance. Dazhui(DU14) can be punctured to treat common cold and fever .

3. Measurement
Each point has its own size and depth according to the different locations. The depth of insertion varies between 0.1 cun (jingxue Well points and other points) and 2.5 cun (Huantiao GB30 and other points). Points on the area where the muscle is thin are shallow, while those on the area where the muscle is thick are deep.

4. Classification
Points can be classified into three categories according to Meridians , nature of points and locations.
According to the locations of points, there are points on the head and neck , points on the chest and abdomen , points on the back and lower back , points on the upper and lower limb s.

5. Basis and Method of Locating Points
Anatomical landmarks, proportional measurement and finger measurement are the three methods in locating points.
A Anatomical landmarks: For instance, points are located according to the distance between anterior and posterior hairline, which is taken as 12 CUN; the distance between two nipples is taken as 8 cun and so on.
B Proportional measurement: The distance between the distal end of the axillary fold to the transverse cubital crease is 9 cun The distance between the transverse cubital crease and transverse wrist crease is 12 cun.
C. finger measurement
There are middle finger measurement, thumb measurement, and four finger measurement, midline of the face , neck , chest and abdomen . The first point is Huiyin(RN1), and the last point Chengjiang (RN 24). The commonly used 10 points (among the 24) are selected and introduced.
Transverse measurement on the chest and abdomen : The distance between the two nipples is 8 cum It is used to locate the transverse distance of the points on tile chest and abdomen .
Longitudinal measurement on the chest : Points are located according to the intercostal space Longitudinal measurement on the abdomen :

The distance from the sternocostal angle (Zhongting RN16) to the umbilicus (Shenque RN 8) is 8 cun, the distance from the mbilicus to the center of the upper border of symphysis pubis is taken as 5 cun.
